Kolkata:
Two days ahead of the declaration of the results of the crucial West Bengal Assembly elections, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has appealed to all, particularly the ruling Left Front, 'to accept the verdict of the people'.
"I appeal to all to accept the verdict of the people. Accept the verdict the people gave spontaneously. I also appeal to those who are now in power to accept whatever be the verdict," Banerjee told newsmen at her Kalighat residence.
"I appreciate the way people came out in large numbers to vote and, so far as I could gather, they have voted for change," she said.
About fears of post-poll violence, party sources quoted Banerjee as having said that the Trinamool Congress was a disciplined party and had never indulged in violence in the past.
"We won 50 per cent seats in the 2008 panchayat elections, but our party workers did not indulge in violence. In 2009, we won the maximum number of seats (19) in the Lok Sabha polls, but we did not take out any victory procession. Our party workers are disciplined and restrained," sources said.
Banerjee held a meeting during the day with party vice-presidents Subrata Mukherjee and Derek O' Brian, all-India general secretary Mukul Roy and senior leaders Saugata Roy and Sudip Bandopadhyay.
Later, a relaxed Banerjee chatted with newspersons. Mediapersons from various parts of the country, including Delhi, Maharashtra and Bihar have arrived here for Friday's counting.
