Dewas, Madhya Pradesh:
At least 16 people were killed on Wednesday when the bus they were travelling in was swept away while it was crossing a bridge over the overflowing Bagri river near Dewas, officials said.
The private bus was on its way to Chapda from Nemawar when it was swept away near Khategaon.
"Sixteen bodies have been recovered," Ujjain Commissioner T Dharma Rao told PTI over phone.
The vehicle was pulled out of the swollen river and no other body was found, he said.
DIG Varun Kapoor said 25 people swam to safety, while three passengers were undergoing treatment at a hospital.
It was feared that several passengers were swept away or feared drown due to strong water current. Divers have been drafted to search their bodies.
Former Congress MLA Kailash Kundal and eyewitnesses said nearly 100 people were travelling in the 52-seater bus.
However, Dewas Collector Pushplata Singh said the exact number of passengers the bus was carrying was not known. She has ordered a magisterial probe into the mishap.
Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 1 lakh each to the kin of the deceased and Rs 10,000 to the injured.
