Meerut/Kanpur:
A constable died and 20 were hospitalised when they fainted while appearing for a physical fitness test for departmental promotion organised in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut and Kanpur districts on Wednesday, officials said.
As a part of the physical test, the policemen were instructed to run for 10 km in the grounds of the Police Lines in Meerut and Kanpur. Around 250 policemen appeared in the physical test in both the districts.
In Meerut, 13 constables fell unconscious and were later hospitalised. "One of them (Agresh Dubey, head constable) has died while the condition of two is stated to be serious," Superintendent of Police (Traffic) SK Singh told reporters in Meerut, some 500 km from Lucknow.
Similarly, around seven policemen fainted one by one in Kanpur Police Lines after completing 6 km of the 10 km run.
"All the policemen are being treated at the Ursala Hospital. The condition of one of them is serious," said a police officer.
