In an apparent bid to escape arrest by police, an auto-lifter drowned after he allegedly jumped into the river in the Bulandshahr district of Lucknow on Monday, police said.
Constables Rajiv Kumar and Sushil Kumar intercepted two vehicles on the basis of suspicion near Dhamera village and inquired about papers on which an occupant left the spot on pretext of bringing the same, they said.
Meanwhile, when three other occupants Gufran, Haseen and Dilshad were interrogated they revealed that the vehicles were lifted ones and their fourth accomplice Saleem had escaped, police said.
After the two constables chased Saleem, he jumped into Kaali river near Khushalpur and drowned, they said.
Later, Saleem's body was fished out, police said, adding that both the constables have been suspended.
