Malda: 16 infants die in three days in state-run hospital

Breathing trouble, low birth weight and infection were the prime causes behind the crib deaths.

Malda, West Bengal: Three more babies died at the Malda Medical College and Hospital today, taking the total number of crib deaths in the facility to 16 in the past three days.

Seventy-five babies are receiving treatment at the hospital.

Meanwhile, the police have ordered a DNA test on the baby whom the parents claimed was swapped in the hospital.

A woman identified as Tuntuni Choudhury of village Meherapur claimed that she gave birth to a "boy" yesterday and the same was conveyed to her by the attending nurses. Her husband subsequently filed an FIR with the English Bazaar police station.

Hospital authorities, however, maintained that the woman gave birth to a girl child and not as claimed by the parents.

According to the Hospital authorities, breathing trouble, low birth weight and infection were the prime causes behind the crib deaths, adding most babies were admitted to the hospital from Chanchol, Habibpur and Pakna areas of the district.

"Severe chill in the weather and lack of proper protection from the winter were also behind the new-borns being infected with diseases and developing breathing troubles. Most of the patients who came from the villages were already in a very bad shape," a hospital official said.
