Man held for smuggling gold worth around Rs 27 lakh at airport

New Delhi: A man was arrested today for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold bars valued at about Rs 27 lakh by hiding it in his rectum at the airport in Delhi.

Acting on a tip-off, the 30-year-old man was intercepted by custom officials after he arrived from Bangkok.

"On detailed examination of his baggage, nothing objectionable was found. But on his personal search, six cut pieces of gold bar, weighing 1,000 grams approximate were recovered from him which he had concealed in his rectum," custom department officials said.

The total value of the gold is assessed to Rs 26.74 lakh, they said.

Later the accused, hailing from Jalandhar in Punjab, was arrested and further probes are on.

Another man was arrested on Sunday by custom officials at the airport for allegedly trying to smuggle in gold biscuits weighing 700 gm worth about Rs 18 lakh.
