Satara:
Lakhs of litres of milk were spilt in protest by Shiv Sainiks on the Pune-Satara higway, a criminal waste in a state where nearly half the children under the age of three are grossly underweight.
Two days ago, the Sena had stopped five more tankers in Satara and had done the same - spilling over 55,000 litres of milk.
Shiv Sena is protesting against the Centre's decision to import larger quantities of milk powder, an import they claim is hurting local dairy farmers.
Viraj Kharade, Shiv Sena up-pramukh, Satara said, "We will spill more milk, we will stone milk tankers and further intensify our agitation as we want the government to focus their attention on this issue."
The Sena, perhaps, hopes to tap into popular sentiment in this NCP stronghold, but that's clearly not working was the people here are angry at the massive waste. "This is no way to protest. People here don;'t have water to drink," a Satara resident told NDTV.
The Congress-NCP government, however, doesn't seem too bothered about such acts of vandalism. No case has been registered by the police against protestors.
