Jadavpur University students stage protest in Kolkata
Kolkata's renowned Jadavpur University was paralyzed for the fourth day today, with students sticking to their demand for the resignation of the university's vice chancellor and taking out a massive protest march in the rain.
The students have said that they will boycott classes till he quits.
They have been gunning for the resignation of the vice chancellor for calling the police in to break up a student protest on Tuesday night. The students also alleged that the police entered the campus and manhandled them.
However, the police commissioner denied any wrong-doing on the part of the force.
"The police had shown extreme restraint and whatever the police did was as per law. The VC had written to us requesting that we rescue him," said Surajit Kar Purakayasta, the city's police commissioner.
Both Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Governor had met the police commissioner about the showdown on Wednesday at the university.
