No casualties were reported from either of the fire incidents.
Delhi witnessed two major fire accidents in two of its busiest markets today.
At 7.55 am in the morning, a fire broke out at the Hamilton House in Connaught Place, in the heart of Delhi.
The fire spread rapidly across the first floor of the building, which housed an NIIT training centre, due to the electronic equipment stored in the office. 60 people in the neighbouring gym had to be evacuated. But no casualties or injuries were reported from the incident.
It took the fire department at least four hours to bring the fire under control at Connaught Place; but the department had more challenges to tackle later in the day.
At around 2 pm, a massive fire broke out in Chandni Chowk's Kinari Bazaar, a market known for selling gemstones and plastic jewelry. The blaze broke out after a transformer reportedly caught fire and it spread quickly along the congested lanes in the area.
Four buildings and almost 25 shops were gutted and reduced to ash. 25 fire tenders had to be rushed to the spot; no casualties or injuries were reported from the incident.
"See the state of the electricity wires here. We have complained to the BSES so many times about these transformers. Unless they remove the transformers, we will not open the shops, the (shopkeepers') association has decided," said Vikas Aggarwal, a local shopkeeper.
