It is nothing short of a classic case. Ten years ago, a case that shocked many, Bibi Jagir Kaur considered to be a heavy weight in Akali politics, was accused of getting her daughter killed in Begowal village of Punjab.
Ten years later, key witness Kawal Jit Singh, husband of the victim, has turned hostile.
22-year-old Harpreet Kaur was poisoned to death after she allegedly married Kawal Jit Singh against the wishes of her mother who was at that time the Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee Chief .
Later the case was handed over to the CBI for investigation. CBI on the basis of the evidence provided by the husband, filed a charge sheet against Bibi Jagir Kaur.
Since then, the trial has been going on in Patiala's CBI court.
Ten years later, now Kawal Jit has taken a dramatic turn in the trial court. Now he says that he never married Harpreet and doesn't know much about the case.
It was just two years back, when Kawal Jit had shown pictures of his wedding. He has also alleged that Bibi Jagir Kaur was threatening him to withdraw the complaint of murder against her. But now, he denies everything.
In a two year old interview that NDTV has a record of, Kawal Jit had quoted " I won't back out....that is out of question....I lost my life partner and my child....I will fight for them....I will fight till the last".
Today, Kawal Jit says that Bibi Jagir Kaur was not involved and Harpreet died a natural death
"I never moved any petition.....Whatever is happening is correct," said Kawal Jit when probed about his U-turn.
The CBI has now filed an application against Kawal jit for turning hostile.
Officials say they have enough evidence to prove that Kawal Jit is lying.
"There can be action against him for giving false statement.......this is punishable.....according to law he can be sentenced to 7 years," said Saxena, CBI Counsel .
This however has made Bibi Jagir Kaur feel more confident. She now very openly claims she is innocent.
"There was no case....it was a fabrication of lies....it was waste of time of the court and it has ruined my life," said Bibi Jagir Kaur, Former SGPC Chief.
What appeared like a clear case once, has now turned into a dicey affair. With all eyes now set on the court's decision, perhaps the last glimmer of hope for justice is now the judiciary.
