New Delhi: Late this afternoon, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact with nearly 700 students in Delhi on the occasion of Teacher's Day.

The students will form the majority of an audience of 1,000 people at a Delhi auditorium where Mr Modi will deliver a speech. He will take 15 questions from students in different cities through video-conferencing.

The programme will start at 3 PM and conclude at 4.45 PM. A multi-platinum controversy has erupted over whether schools have been told that it's mandatory for them to keep students back to watch the speech. Education Minister Smriti Irani says it's not an order, but a series of notices suggest that schools have been asked to provide details of how many students were made to watch the PM's address - seen by many as an unsubtle indication of the government's intent.
