Andhra Pradesh: Children shot dead at police weapon show

Hyderabad: Two children were killed in the Khammam district of Andhra Pradesh when a special police Constable's loaded weapon went off when school students were being shown weapons as part of an exercise to improve public awareness.

As part of week-long celebrations leading up to the police commemoration day on October 21, school students were being familiarised with what it is like to be a policeman. That is when a loaded weapon went off, killing two boys, one in class X and another in class VIII. Three more children were injured.

The DGP Aravinda Rao says as part of an Open House, the attempt was to familiarise GenNext with the duties and responsibilities of a policeman. A loaded weapon should never have been part of the show.

"It is unfortunate that the constable probably was overenthusiastic. He is supposed to keep his weapon loaded but he is not supposed to bring that in front of students. He brought that loaded and it was unfortunate and stupid on his part. We are taking disciplinary action and a criminal case also will be booked against him," Rao said.
