Kolkata:
CPM leader and former MP Anil Basu has issued a handwritten statement to apologise for his comments against Mamata Banerjee.
Mr Basu wrote, "At a public meeting in Hooghly, the comments I carelessly made about the Opposition leader, I shouldn't have done so at all. This is completely against the policies and culture of our party. In this connection, I realize that there has been a negative reaction among the people. I am begging forgiveness for the language I used."
West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya said Mr Basu's comments were 'very unfortunate'.
"We have publicly censured him, we have warned him not to use such language, We have told him to publicly apologise. If necessary there will be further punishment," said the Chief Minister.
Mr Basu had questioned the money being used by Mamata Banerjee in the elections and ridiculed her in the most vile way on Friday - speaking of the Trinamool Chief and sex workers in the same breath.
"America is giving Mamata the money. Why should she take money from Chennai and Bangalore? Rich clients have come, so there is no place for poor clients. I am asking Mamata, where did she get the Rs 34 crore?" he had said at a public meeting in Hoogly.
