Defence Minister AK Antony puts off visit to Australia

New Delhi: Defence Minister AK Antony has put off his visit to Australia which was to start from February 12.

Officially no reason was given for the deferment of the visit but it is believed that it has been postponed in view of French President Francois Hollande's visit around the same time.

Fresh dates would be finalised as per the mutual convenience of the two sides, Defence Ministry officials said in New Delhi.

Defence aspect of the relationship between India and France is expected to be high on agenda during Hollande's visit to New Delhi. The two sides are expected to discuss the issues related to the multi-billion dollar Rafale combat aircraft deal.

Rafale, which is manufactured by French firm Dassault Aviation, was selected by India from among a host of competitors such as American F-16 and F-18 and Russian MiGs.

During Hollande's first visit, the two sides are also expected to discuss ways to develop further other aspects of their relationship including nuclear aspects.

The French side is also expected to push the case for its firms planning to take part in the multi-billion tender for producing the new line of six conventional submarines for the force.
