Large swathes of south Kashmir and Srinagar city have been affected by the floods.
The Election Commission today interacted with political parties in Jammu and Kashmir as part of an exercise to decide the timing of Assembly polls in the state which was recently ravaged by floods. The commission however said that it will hold further consultations before taking a decision.
"The full Election Commission will hold further consultations in Delhi before deciding on the timing for J&K Assembly polls," VS Sampath, the Chief Election Commissioner said today, adding that "We've had discussions with all recognized political parties in the state.
They have given very clear views."
While the National Conference told the full commission headed by Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath, which arrived here this morning, that time was not conducive for polls in view of large scale destruction caused by the floods last month, ruling coalition partner Congress and opposition parties including PDP have supported holding polls before the end of this year as per schedule.
Large swathes of south Kashmir and Srinagar have been badly affected by the floods, which killed more than 270 people and crippled infrastructure in several parts of the state. Thousands have been rendered homeless in the state.
A new government has to be in place in the state before January 19, when the six year term of the Assembly ends.
