Lakhimpur Kheri:
A minor girl in Uttar Pradesh has committed suicide after she was allegedly gangraped. The incident took place in the Lakhimpur Kheri district, where another teenager was killed inside a police compound after a rape attempt last month.
16-year-old Pooja's body was found hanging from the ceiling fan in her house. In her suicide note, the Class XII student said she brought dishonor to her family and requested that a post-mortem should not be conducted.
Two days after her death, the autopsy report revealed that she was raped.
Pooja's father claims she was gangraped by the village chief's husband Anu Verma and his men, who threatened to expose the teenager's alleged affair with her school teacher - whose role is also suspected.
"She was in the sugarcane field when they caught her and raped her. She started screaming and then the villagers found out about it," said Ram Prasad Tiwari, Pooja's father.
Police have detained the main accused Anu Verma and two of his accomplices. A second autopsy by a panel of doctors has also been ordered.
"Two accomplices of Anu Verma have been taken in for questioning and we have asked for a re-examination of her post mortem. A panel of doctors will look into it...the man is on the run we are trying to arrest him," said Amit Chandra, Superintendent of Police, Lakhimpur Kheri.
Last month, the attempted rape and murder of a teenager inside a police compound in Lakhimpur Kheri sparked massive outrage. That was the beginning of the spate of crime against women that followed, something that doesn't seem to stop.
