Prime Minister Narendra Modi today condemned the attack on the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa on Wednesday, saying as a nation that had experienced a terror attack on its own Parliament, India shared the outrage.
"As a nation that has experienced a horrific terrorist attack on its Parliament, we share the sense of outrage and trauma of the people of Canada over the attack on the highest institution of democracy," PM Modi said in a statement, a day after a soldier was killed in the Canadian capital an assailant who stormed Parliament before being shot dead.
Expressing condolences, PM Modi said, "Canada is one of India's strongest partners and we will continue to strengthen our cooperation in combating terrorism and other crimes for a safer future for our people."
13 people, including five militants were killed in the 2001 attack on India's Parliament.
Last night, the prime minister had called reports of the attack "extremely disturbing" and said he prayed for everyone's safety.
Canada's Parliament came under attack on Wedneday with a barrage of gunshots fired both inside and outside the building. A man with a rifle shot a soldier standing guard at the National War Memorial in downtown Ottawa, before seizing a car and driving to the doors of the parliament building.
