Guwahati:
A week after the death of a woman in Assam's Lakhimpur, the police have arrested a man named Raju Chutia. The police says that Raju was known to the woman and was in relationship with her for the last two years.
He has been charged with attempted murder, kidnapping and rape.
"The police have arrested a person, but we believe that the real culprit are still at large. They should identify and expose the real culprit," said Jadu Mani, president, North Lakhimpur All Assam Students' Union (AASU).
The family, meanwhile, said they want CBI probe. "The Assam Police is investigating. But if they are not able to solve the case, we want the CBI to take over," said Viraj Sharma, the brother-in-law of the victim.
Initial reports said that the 30-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped in an autorickshaw and thrown out of it on Friday, but the post-mortem report has ruled it out. The report says that the woman died because of the injury the right side of her body, including the head, after the fall from the auto.
Whether she fell out because of a sudden brake or whether she was pushed out is still being investigated. The police says they are not ruling out murder. The auto driver is still absconding.
There have been angry protests in Assam over the woman's death. People who saw the woman fall out of the vehicle took her to a local hospital. From there she was taken to a Guwahati hospital she died of her injuries on Sunday.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has ordered an inquiry and is "personally monitoring" the situation.
