National Bravery Awards for 24 of India's Young Bravehearts

Winners of the National Bravery Awards for 2014 at a press conference in Delhi on Saturday.

New Delhi: Ahead of India's 65th Republic Day celebrations, 24 children between the age of 8 and 17 have been selected on Satuday from all across the country for the prestigious National Bravery Awards. Four of these awards will be conferred posthumously.

Feburary 1, 2014, is a day etched in 16-year-old Resham Fatma's memory. One her way to tuitions, Resham was kidnapped by her 38-year-old uncle, who poured acid over her head when Resham turned down his marriage proposal.

However, Resham did not cow down, and displayed exemplary courage by pushing her uncle away, managed to jump out of the car and report this incident to the police.

Two surgeries and countless injections later, Resham has lofty aspirations. "I want to be an IAS officer. I want to ensure the perpetrators of acid-attacks are punished," she says.

Resham will be conferred with the Bharat Award - the highest of the National Bravery Awards - for 2014, and will participate in the Republic Day parade.

Initiated by the Indian Council for Child Welfare in 1957, the Award, which includes a cash prize and a citation, has been awarded to 895 children since it's inception.
