'Nobody Commits Rape Deliberately', Says Chhattisgarh Home Minister

Raipur: After the brutal rape and murder of two cousins in Uttar Pradesh's Badaun sparked a nationwide outrage, Chhattisgarh Home Minister Ramsevak Paikra has landed himself into controversy by saying that rape happens "by mistake".

On Friday, Mr Paikra said that "nobody commits rape on purpose" but it is committed by "deceit". Hours later, the minister denied having made the remarks.

He was responding to questions about the rise in incidents of rape. He also said that the state government was concerned about the issue and had asked police to take prompt action whenever a rape complaint is filed.

Two days ago, Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Babulal Gaur had stirred controversy by defending the Yadavs who rule neighbouring Uttar Pradesh and are currently under fire for not just failing to curb incidents of rape and brutal assaults on women in the state, but also for making the most callous comments on the matter.

Mr Gaur, 64, had said, "No culprit is going to inform us and then commit rape. If that was the case we could have caught them easily. It is sometimes right and sometimes wrong. Till the time rape is not reported we cannot act on it. So what would Akhilesh and Mulayam do to prevent it."
