Shiv Kumar Yadav, the Uber cab driver arrested for allegedly raping a woman passenger
Arrested Uber driver Shiv Kumar Yadav, a serial offender, faked a character certificate to drive a cab but the Delhi Police say this will not happen again.
"We will work out system to ensure that no person with criminal antecedents gets a licence. We will devise a new system for issuing these certificates and verification. They will be done after proper police investigation," Delhi Police chief BS Bassi told NDTV.
"I assure the women of Delhi, we are doing everything we can to make Delhi safe for you," he added.
Yadav was arrested on Sunday for allegedly raping a passenger, a 27-year-old financial executive, in Delhi last Friday. He was arrested twice earlier and faces multiple criminal cases, which include two for rape, a case of assault on a woman and another for carrying arms.
Yadav had a permit to operate a taxi issued by the Transport Department, and the character certificate used to obtain that permit was forged, said the Delhi Police chief.
Sources say the police have identified the person who forged the certificate for Yadav and are questioning him to find out if any policeman or transport department official was involved.
Mr Bassi said the lapse in this case did not mean that the system was wrong and there was no move by the police to take over licensing. He suggested that women should also take care of themselves. "We are organizing various workshops to empower women," he said.
The police in Delhi have faced immense criticism over unchecked crime against women despite the outrage, protests and soul-searching after the 2012 gang-rape of a young student on a moving bus.
