Lucknow:
The Congress unit in Uttar Pradesh would observe the birthday of Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi on June 19 as 'Kisan Adhikar Diwas' (farmers' rights day).
"Kisan chaupals will be organised at all the blocks of the state on that day. Through these chaupals (gatherings), Congress would expose the Mayawati government's new land acquisition policy and would also take the view of farmers' expectations from the new land bill," a party release quoted UPCC president Rita Bahuguna Joshi as saying.
Joshi said that in today's meeting of party leaders from western districts of Uttar Pradesh, it was decided that the proposed 'kisan mahapanchayat' would be made a historical one to give a strong voice to farmers.
During the proposed mahapanchayat, Rahul would listen to the suggestions and problems of farmers, kisan samitis and pradhans after which a document would be prepared and handed over to the Prime Minister for including it in the new bill, she said.
Similar preparatory meetings would be held on June 12 in Faizabad for the eastern region and on June 16 in Lucknow for the central region, the Congress leader said.
