A senior Karnataka police official - accused of taking photographs of women without their consent at a coffee shop, has said that he is being targeted.
P Ravindranath, ADGP of the Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) was taken to the police station after the incident on Monday, but complications ensued with the case.
Mr Ravindranath alleges that he is being targeted due to a hostile relationship with another senior official. However, his colleagues have been protesting against what they feel was harassment but the protests have not gone down well with the state government.
Karnataka's home minister, KJ George said, "It was an unfortunate incident, but not all of them are KSRP police. Public were there, bystanders, relatives of the police people were there. Whoever involved the policemen - we will take disciplinary action against them."
Investigation is on into whether he did indeed take objectionable pictures of two young women. The case has been handed over to the CID for investigation.
The home minister said, "We are awaiting the CID report. After getting the report we will take action. He is a good officer. He himself voluntarily resigned now. He wanted to be arrested - I told him, we cannot arrest like that. We have to investigate the matter."
Mr Ravindranath expressed his disappointment at the way he was being treated by his senior officers. "I met the Commissioner - he is saying 'It is not my decision, go to the DG.' I said, 'I will come with you in your car' - he says, 'don't touch me'. I said I would sit at the back. He said, 'You can't enter my car' He is treating me like an untouchable."
The issue is receiving intense media coverage and even though the details are unclear, there is the possibility that this might be a case of a senior police officer harassing women.
