Thiruvananthapuram:
Cherrin C, 19, is an engineering student. But this Christmas Day, he will don on a red suit to play Santa Claus for a special audience.
For Cherrin and 15 other young people, this Christmas is extra special. They are spending it with a group of women - all in their eighties - who are living in an old age home in Thiruvananthapuram. The women have no family members to celebrate the festival with.
"There is no reason for doing this. I do it because I want to. It makes me happy," says Cherrin.
Karris, another student, says, "We have families, they don't. We can celebrate Christmas with parents. What about them? We came here to make them happy, to give them a chance to smile."
This group of youngsters finds a grandmother, who sends a flying kiss to Santa, who is the best singer of the evening.
Putting their loneliness aside for this evening, these elderly women listen to popular Christmas carols in Malayalam. The gifts only widen their smiles.
Maridas, who is celebrating her first Christmas here, never expected such a joyous season.
"God bless each one of them," she says.
A bubbling Rajamma says, "I enjoyed everything, Santa Claus, the songs, the gifts..."
These youngsters say the inspiration for spreading smiles in such an unusual way, comes from the Bible, and the fact that Jesus Christ himself was born in a manger.
