Ordinance row: If I were in Prime Minister's place, I would have quit, says Parkash Singh Badal

New Delhi: A controversial ordinance that protects convicted parliamentarians and triggered a furious critique from Rahul Gandhi is likely to be withdrawn this evening by the cabinet. The Prime Minister has reportedly conveyed this decision in a meeting with afternoon with President Pranab Mukherjee, who had allegedly expressed grave reservations about the executive order when it was sent to him for his assent last week.

  • This seemed like a political urgency. I don't understand how a smaller bench can squash a judgment given by a larger bench. I don't know what urgency the government has to introduce this ordinance. It should have been sent to the House and a standing committee should have been appointed. This should be thoroughly discussed in the House and then passed. An ordinance is not necessary at this juncture.
