Two teenagers gunned down in Newark as homicides hit 100

Newark, New Jersey: Newark police are investigating the Christmas night shooting deaths of a boy and a girl as the city marks a grim milestone. It's the first year since 2006 that the homicide count in New Jersey's largest city has reached 100.

Police say a 13-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy were killed in a shooting that has also left a third young victim hospitalised in critical but stable condition.

The names of the dead children have not been released, and police have not yet provided information about the circumstances surrounding the shootings.

Both victims died at University Hospital shortly before 11 pm on Wednesday.

Newark police had reported 96 homicides citywide through December 8. Five more homicides were reported in the last 10 days, including the Christmas night shootings of the two young teens.
