A wooden fish made out of deadwood in Bengaluru's Cubbon Park
Two-headed animals, fish and a bear - it's an unusual sight at Bengaluru's Cubbon Park, where suddenly many sculptures, carved out of wood, have come up.
Earlier, when trees and branches fell in the park, the wood was carted away, but this year, it was gathered and converted into interesting sculptures by artists coordinated by the Shilpakala Akademy and the Horticultural Department.
"Usually the dead wood was taken away but this year we had a sculpture camp with artists from different districts in Karnataka. We have made 19 sculptures and these we will installed in Cubbon Park in important areas. Scientists from the Wood Science Institute came here - they have given treatment for all this so that during the rainy season even insect pests should not damage. We should store for many years," Mahantesh Murgod, Deputy Director, Cubbon Park told NDTV.
Among the wooden sculptures is a seesaw by an artist, Shivakumar, made out of a log with carvings of apartments on one side and of trees on the other.
Another artist, Shanth Kumar had a message on the importance of trees. His carving was of a tree that was caged-in.
"It's about a fight between the tree and the human being... We are not giving space to the tree - at least a single tree in front of our house. In between our compound and the road, there's a footpath. At least there we can leave the space for the tree."
