As soon as Bihar finished voting today, Lalu Yadav was ready with the result. He said the 'Grand Alliance', which combines his party, the RJD, with Nitish Kumar's JDU and the Congress will accrue 190 of the 243 seats.
"Nitish was and is our candidate for Chief Minister. Even if the RJD gets more seats, Nitish will be Chief Minister" said Lalu.
An aggregate of six different exit polls shows a neck-and-neck result - the Grand Alliance just one seat ahead of the BJP and its allies with 118 seats (BJP at 117, others with 8).
The BJP said that though Prime Minister campaigned extensively for his party's alliance, the result cannot be seen as a reflection of his popularity.
"The PM campaigns whenever the party asks him to. He gets neither the credit nor the blame," said senior BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on NDTV.
Bihar has delivered a record voter turnout of nearly 57 per cent as compared to about 53 per cent in the last state election in 2010, said the Election Commission.
