In a first, NSUI wins Panjab University students' council elections

Chandigarh: In a first, the National Students' Union of India or NSUI has bagged the coveted post of president of the Panjab University Campus Students' Council (PUCSC) in the elections held on Wednesday.

NSUI candidate Chandan Rana won the post of president by a comfortable margin of 838 votes over his nearest rival.

The council has been dominated by the PU Students' Union (PUSU) and Students of PU (SOPU) and it is for the first time that the NSUI has won the post.

Rana defeated PUSU candidate Satwant Singh Dedri (2,761 votes) and SOPU candidate Amandeep Singh (2,285).

The NSUI also won the post of council joint secretary. Its candidate Sunny Mehta won by a margin of 50 votes.

The NSUI was never a strong group in the campus till now.

The other two posts of PUCSC, vice president and secretary, were won by the Ahkil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad's (ABVP) Disha Arora and Indian National Students Organisation's (INSO) Abha Sharma.

The declaration of results was delayed by several hours as leaders and supporters of PUSU, SOPU, ABVP and INSO protested against alleged poll malpractices outside the office of Vice Chancellor Arun Grover.

PUSU and SOPU, which dominated the PU students' polls for the past many years, could not manage even a single seat of office bearer in the PUCSC.

Over 13,550 students were eligible to vote in the elections. There are four posts of PUCSC office bearers and 109 departmental representatives.
