JNU inquiry report recommends expulsion of Kanhaiya Kumar, four others
New Delhi:
Kanhaiya Kumar, the JNU student charged with sedition, today denied that he had received any expulsion warning from the university following an inquiry report. He led an "azaadi" protest march where a new slogan was raised: 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan, Jai Samvidhan (hail the soldiers, farmers and Constitution)'.
Here are 10 developments in the story:
"I did receive a show-cause notice but there was nothing about rustication in it," Mr Kumar said. He has reportedly been fined.
The JNU or Jawaharlal Nehru University has sent notice to 21 students including Kanhaiya Kumar over a controversial February 9 event in support of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, in which anti-India slogans were raised.
Kanhaiya Kumar, charged with sedition for his alleged role in the event, was released from jail earlier this month after three weeks in jail. Two others, Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya, are still in jail.
In the afternoon, Kanhaiya Kumar led a "march for democracy" organized by Left student activists in the heart of Delhi.
"We want the resignation of Smriti Irani, dropping of sedition charges, the release of two students from jail, no interferences in the university's autonomy and a law against caste discrimination in colleges," Mr Kumar told NDTV.
Some reports had suggested that the JNU inquiry had recommended the expulsion of Mr Kumar, Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya. But that has been denied by students.
In the showcause notice to students, the university has accused them of "violating the university's rules and norms" and asked them to explain.
Teachers and students have said that the inquiry report must be made public.
"The notice is very vague. It doesn't say what we have done. It asks us to clarify, but what should we clarify?" questioned one of the students, Anand Prakash.
Mr Kumar was released on bail from Tihar Jail on March 3 while Mr Khalid and Mr Bhattacharya are still in judicial custody.
