As Floods Continue in Chennai, People Open Their Doors to Strangers

As waters keep rising outside, Mohamed Yunus has invited five strangers to live in his posh apartment.

Chennai: Twenty-six year old entrepreneur Mohamed Yunus has opened the doors of his posh apartment in Chennai to people left homeless by the heavy rains that have killed over 100 people in the city.

Following his offer on Facebook, five young working women have moved in two days after water entered their paying guest accommodation.

Around 12,000 people have been evacuated by the army and the Air Force in the city.

Mr Yunus says the sight of an evacuated young mother nursing her baby in the open moved him.

"I was embarrassed to see her and though I couldn't help her, I thought there must be many like her I can help. When they left they were in tears," he said.

The women, all BPO employees from outside Chennai, do not want to be named.

"It is a noble gesture. We couldn't believe someone would open their doors for us, total strangers," one of them said.

Authorities say around 12,000 people were evacuated as waters entered their homes or surrounded them. Though there are relief centres, many moved to homes of friends or relatives. But for those who don't have a close contact, it is a difficult situation.

Tamil Television artist Gaayathri also put up a Facebook post, opening her home to people hit by the floods. But so far, none has turned up.

After a let-up of two days, many parts of Chennai witnessed rains today, including suburban Tambaram and Kundrathur. The weather office forecast more rains for the next 24 hours, especially in areas along the Western ghats.
