Pune:
In a daring and meticulously planned jail break, a life convict undergoing imprisonment at the high security Yerwada jail in Pune managed to escape during the wee hours of Monday.
36-year-old Balsaheb Pawar fled by cutting the heavy iron window grills and later broke open the locks of the barrack he was locked in. He then jumped the 15-feet high inner wall of the jail and finally used a rope to jump across the 20-feet high jail wall.
Pawar, a welder fitter by profession was involved in a murder case and was sentenced to life imprisonment last year.
The Minister of State for Home Ramesh Bagwe visited the jail after the incident.
"According to jail norms, there should be one guard behind six prisoners but at Yerwada central prison there is one guard for every 20 prisoners," Bagwe said.
"This could not have been done alone because he has crossed over an approximately 15 to 20 feet high wall and has also crossed over 3 to 4 walls, so there is a possibility that there were other inmates and some jail workers involved with him," he added.
A high level iqnuiry has been ordered.
