The victim's parents had lodged a missing complaint at Sonipat police station
Sonipat:
A 23-year-old woman has been gang-raped and brutally murdered, with her head smashed with a brick, barely 70 kilometres from the national capital Delhi.
The woman was allegedly kidnapped from her home in Haryana's Sonipat on Tuesday, and taken to the Rohtak district, the police have said.
There, she was first gang-raped and then hit repeatedly with a brick on her head, police officer Ajay Malik said.
The two men accused of killing the woman - Sumit and Vikas - have been arrested, the police officer said, adding Sumit was an acquaintance of the woman.
The woman's body was spotted by a passerby in the urban estate area of Rohtak on Thursday. Stray dogs had bitten away her face and lower portion of the body.
The victim's parents have demanded that the rapists of their daughter be hanged. They allege neither the police nor anyone from the government has visited them so far. They had filed a missing report in Sonipat.
Meanwhile, Congress president Sonia Gandhi has expressed deep shock and outrage over the gang-rape and murder, and highlighted the need for "revisiting" the issue of women's safety.
"This savage and bone-chilling incident has shocked the conscience of the nation, reminding each one of us about the crying need for revisiting the important issue of women's safety and security," she said in a statement.
Expressing heartfelt condolences to the family, Mrs Gandhi hoped that the Haryana government would take action against the attackers and provide necessary solace to the family.
