Arvind Kejriwal, Shashi Tharoor At JNU Over Missing Student

New Delhi: More than a fortnight after a student went missing in Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University, opposition leaders made a beeline for the prestigious institution. From Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to Shashi Tharoor of the Congress, a host of leaders addressed the students.

In his address, Mr Kejriwal took on the police and the BJP, saying, "The police hasn't done any investigation. The message is clear. This country is subjected to hooliganism by BJP, RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) and the ABVP (students' group linked to the RSS and the BJP)."

Najeeb Ahmed, a student of the Masters' course in Biotechnology, had gone missing on October 14 after a brawl in the campus. Students affiliated to the Left and the Right have blamed each other for his disappearance and accused the university of not doing enough to trace him.

Calling justice for Najeeb "imperative", senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said, "There has to be a serious investigation and it has to go beyond what this university's administration is entrusted with. The police have some questions to answer."

Pointing a finger squarely at the Delhi Police, Mr Kejriwal said, "If the ABVP is involved, the Delhi Police cannot have an impartial investigation".

Referring to his detention yesterday after he went to meet the family of Subedar RK Grewal, who had allegedly comitted suicide over the non-payment of money under the government's One Rank One Pension Scheme, he said, "You can imagine when they could detain a state's CM for 10 hours. I have written a letter to Rajnath and also want to meet the President."

Apart from Mr Kejriwal, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, who had also gone to meet Mr Grewal's family was also detained twice. SO were other senior leaders of the Congress and AAP including Jyotiraditya Scindia, Manish Sisodia and Gopal Rai.

Last month, protesting students had kept the Vice-Chancellor, Rector and other University officials confined in the administrative block for the whole night, demanding that they take action to trace Najeeb.
