AAP, Somnath Bharti Attack Lt Governor, Criticised For Lunch Comment

AAP lawmaker Somnath Bharti led a delegation to Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung's house

New Delhi: A dozen Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) lawmakers today landed at Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung's doorstep, bizarrely demanding that he file an FIR or police complaint against himself. They reportedly didn't take an appointment and alleged that they were turned away.

"12 AAP MLAs tried to meet LG Najeeb Jung today, but he preferred going for lunch than meeting us," AAP lawmaker Somnath Bharti told reporters. Many on Twitter wondered whether he had made a blunder, since it is the month of Ramzan.

AAP's offensive comes after the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB), investigating a tanker scam on Mr Jung's recommendation, filed a case against Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal listing corruption, misuse of power and criminal conspiracy.

"If LG can ask ACB to register a complaint against Kejriwal for no action and non-cancellation of the contract, LG is no different. He has been sitting on FIRs against Sheila Dikshit and Mukesh Ambani too, he is equally guilty," Mr Bharti told NDTV.

The tanker scam involves allegations that in 2012, the Delhi government led by then Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit awarded tenders for 385 stainless steel tankers from private companies at a huge loss and in violation of rules.

Last year, an inquiry ordered by the AAP government established the scam but no action was taken. AAP sources claim they did not want to impact water supply in the city but the BJP alleges the government didn't want to lose revenue.

The inquiry report accessed by NDTV says terms were changed to favour contractors.

Two complaints were filed; one by AAP minister Kapil Mishra against Shiela Dikshit, and the second by the BJP, which accuses Mr Kejriwal of "sitting on the report" for nearly a year.

After the complaints were forwarded by the Lieutenant Governor for action, the police said both Ms Dikshit and Mr Kejriwal will be questioned.
