New Delhi:
The All India institute of Medical Sciences of Delhi has launched a policy called "Adopt a patient," under which people can donate directly to the institute for the recovery of needy patients.
Dr Amit Gupta, Media Head of AIIMS told NDTV, "It is a transparent process. People can see which patient they are donating for online... 50 per cent of the patients admitted in AIIMS cannot pay for their treatment."
AIIMS admits 1.5 lakh to 2 lakh patients every year and close to 20,000 patients a day. This policy has already benefitted 100 patients since its inception.
Mubina, a 42-year-old daily wage laborer from Haryana's Mewat, had injured her spine after being hit by a dumper.
Her surgery and hospital expenses came close to Rs 6 lakh, an astronomical amount for her family, whose combined earnings don't cross Rs 500 on a good day. But "Adopt a patient" came to her rescue. Though she is in coma after a surgery, there's still hope.
Dinesh, an 18-year-old boy from Abbas Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, suffered a spinal fracture due to a motorbike accident. His family owns a 1-acre plot of agricultural land and find it hard to make ends meet. "Adopt a patient" policy gave them respite as well.
