The striking workers threatened to continue their protests across Delhi if their demands were not met.
Nearly 60,000 sanitation workers of East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) called off their three-day long strike today which saw piles of garbage dumped on roads in the national capital. The workers have been demanding for regular payment of salaries, payment of arrears, regularisation of contractual workers and cashless health cards.
The workers' union representatives met with the AAP government which has promised to release funds to municipalities in December instead of March next year.
"The decision to call off strike was also taken in view of the approaching Diwali festival," Sanjay Gehlot, president of Swatantra Mazdoor Vikas Sanyukt Morcha said.
However, another sanitation workers leader Rajender Mewati accused Mr Gehlot of taking unilateral decision of calling off strike without the approval of executive of the Sanyukt Morcha, adding that the strike will continue.
Joint Front of Municipal Corporation of Delhi Unions General Secretary Santlal Chawariya has welcomed calling off the strike and said that they will hold a meeting of the Unions affiliated to the Joint Front on Monday to consider the developments.
The workers today protested outside Shahadra (south) zone office of EDMC and dumped garbage on the streets. This is the third strike by sanitation workers in the last one year. The workers have been demanding arrears pending since 2003 and regularisation of contractual employees.
The mayors of three different corporations had earlier met with Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia but no solution could come out of the talks.
The BJP also attacked the AAP government in Delhi and blamed them for not releasing funds for the workers' salaries.
"The Delhi government is not releasing funds for salaries. They have money for advertisement, to pay their employees but they do not have money for the poor safai karamcharis. They should avoid this kind of politics," he said.
