Delhi Police, Family At Loggerheads Over Minor Girl's Death In Delhi

The girl was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her residence in Delhi's Inderpuri on Thursday.

New Delhi: The alleged suicide of a 12-year-old girl in Delhi on Thursday has now turned into a battle between the Delhi Police and the girl's family.

The girl was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her residence in Delhi's Inderpuri on Thursday.

While the girl's mother Anjini claims she was raped by their landlord's sons and the suicide was staged, police say no external injuries or signs of assault were found during post-mortem.

Narrating the incident, Ms Anjini said, "When I was informed, I came rushing to the house. The police and the landlords locked me inside a room and would not let me go up to see my daughter's body."

"I saw the landlady giving money to the police," she told NDTV.

The allegations made by the girl's parents, that the police immediately rushed the body to the Green Park crematorium, far away from the girl's house and the cremation process was conducted in a matter of 30 minutes, contradict Delhi Police's claim that "the body was handed over as per procedure and then the cremation was conducted".

"The cremation took place in the presence of all her relatives. The body was handed over as per procedure and then the cremation was conducted," said DCP southwest Surender Kumar.

The crematorium was informed of a body coming in much before it reached at 1.30 pm.

"I was informed at about 10.30 am by police staff that a poor girl's body is coming in and she needs to be cremated. About 8-10 policemen were present during the cremation," Dinesh Kumar, the priest conducting the cremation, told NDTV.

The girl's family claims that the police did not pay heed to their claims of not going ahead with the cremation and that their consent was forcibly taken. Moreover, the victim's father's was asked to switch of his mobile phone at the crematorium.

The Delhi Commission of Women has ordered a probe into the matter stating that the haste in which the cremation process was carried out and the presence of so many policemen at the crematorium raises suspicion.

"We want this case to be investigated by an independent agency because it has never so happened that ACP-SHO everyone has come down to cremate one person and the mother just keeps screaming that her daughter should not be cremated," said DCW Chief Swati Maliwal.

However, the Delhi Police has denied these allegations saying no external injuries or signs of assault were found during the post-mortem, the report for which will be available in a week. The victim's viscera samples have been preserved by the police.
