Delhi University's First Open Day Sessions for Fresh Admissions Leave Students Bemused

New Delhi: Sixty-one colleges, 60,000 seats - the admission season for Delhi University's undergraduate courses started on Thursday with two open day sessions conducted by the varsity. The sessions were meant to address the queries of the anxious students, but many of them left with their confusion intact.

The list of criteria overwhelmed many. Others were still in the dark about processes -- entrance tests for courses, changes in the sports quota and percentage point deduction for subjects.

"I can't tell what is different this time. Lots of students are still uncertain about things," said Preeti Chaudhary, one of the students who attended the session.

While the best of four criteria which includes one language and three academic subjects, remains the same as last year; 2.5 % points will be deducted from them, if the subject applied for is not included in vocational subject. Besides, 10 marks will be deducted for every vocational course not included. Also, there will be a maximum penalty for a stream change in case of BA and B.Com honors courses.

To keep the system centralized, the university has done away with entrance tests in various courses barring courses like Bachelor in Business Economics and Bachelor in Finance and Investment. For students seeking admission through sports quota, fitness test has now been centralized.

"As far as the confusion over the best of four options is concerned - there really are no issues, may be it is because of changes in terminology but otherwise there is no change really," Deputy Dean, GS Tuteja told NDTV.

University officials assured students that their queries would be answered online as well. However, most students preferred to meet the faculty in person as they claimed that the website had not been updated.

But another student, Nikita, said, "Online has information from 2014 academic year. There are no updates on 2015, it shows old information".
