Indraprastha University Fees Hike: Congress Leader Slams AAP Government

Indrapastha University has increased its annual fees by 75 per cent this academic session.

New Delhi: Attacking the AAP government over Guru Gobind Singh Indrapastha University increasing its fees by 75 per cent, senior Congress leader Mukhesh Sharma today accused Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of cheating the youth by pushing the agenda of privatisation of education.

GGSIPU, a Delhi-government run university has increased its annual fees by 75 per cent this academic session. Around 5,000 students are enrolled in the 11 University Schools of Studies (USS) in the university.

"Not only the Kejriwal government has cheated the youth, but it is also pushing the agenda of privatisation of education. We demand that the fees hike be rolled back immediately," Mr Sharma said.

"Why has the fees been increased when students have not been given any additional facility? Also, they have not increased the number of seats. We will resist this attempt of the AAP government to force students to move outside Delhi to pursue higher studies," he said.

IP University officials said the board of management (BOM) had in June approved the decision of revising the fees.

The admission fees charged by self-financing institutes has also been hiked in keeping with the recommendations made by the State Fee Regulatory Committee set up by the Delhi government in February 2013 to determine fees in private institutions in Delhi.
