A six year old student of a private school in New Delhi was found dead on the school campus today. The boy was a student of Class I at Ryan International School in Delhi's Vasant Kunj. The Delhi government has asked the area's district magistrate to probe the death.
Police officials told NDTV that there was a delay in the school authorities informing them about the death. Devansh Meena was found dead in a pit near the school's amphitheatre.
The incident happened around noon but the police were informed by the hospital where he was taken, officials said. It is not clear what caused the death. School authorities said the boy went missing from class and was found inside the pit which served as a refill tank. It is not clear of he had drowned.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, South, Premnath told NDTV that the police were informed around 2.40 pm. "The child was brought dead (to the hospital). We are probing the case," he said.
"(The) child went missing when the seventh period was on. There was a poetry competition in school that is why the child was here. (We) will take legal action. His father works in a government hospital," the police officer said.
The boy's father, R K Meena, said, "I suspect the school...When I asked the principal what happened, she shouted at me and asked me to keep quiet."
Speaking on the death, later in the evening, school Principal Sandhya Sabu said, "We really are saddened. It is a freak accident. He was a special child." She however denied Mr Meena's charge. "We understand parents going through this moment of loss. But allegations are wrong," she said.
This is the second death of a child in the school premises in the national capital in less than a week. On January 27, a five year old boy drowned in a septic tank in a corporation-run school when he went to the toilet.
Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, has promised strict action. "Accountability has to be fixed. How can they run a school if they can't keep children safe?" he questioned.
The police have moved the body to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for a post mortem examination to find out what may have caused his death, sources said. More details are awaited.
