Kerala's Longest Serving Legislator Battles Bribery Allegations In Pala

KM Mani has been elected from Kerala's Pala constituency for 50 years.

Thiruvananthapuram: K M Mani - chief of the Kerala Congress (M) and a crucial Congress ally in the state, may be new to selfies but not to victory in this constituency, Pala.  He has been elected from here for the last 50 years and is the longest serving member of the Kerala legislative Assembly.

But Mr Mani is also the only UDF minister who was forced to resign over allegations of bribery and corruption in 2015.

After the government implemented its new liquor policy, bar owners alleged that he had been bribed for renewing of bar licences, which were never renewed. His resignation had comes despite Chief Minister Oommen Chandy sticking his neck out for him all through.

In his inimitable style, Mr Mani told NDTV: "I have been elected since 1965. It's not a small achievement. What political embarrassment are they talking about? There is nothing against me, nothing proved."

Standing against him is Mani C Kappan -- actor producer and director, from the Nationalist Congress Party, an LDF ally.

In the last assembly elections in 2011, he lost to the "Pala King" by a little over 5,000 votes. And in 2016, he is gunning for his opponent with the corruption allegations.

"KM Mani was known as 'Pala king'. But no longer. People are very upset with his corruption. He is a circus man who knows every political gimmick. But this time I will win, with a margin of at least 25,000 votes", Mr Kappan claimed.

On the ground, voters say rubber prices and corruption are the two big factors in this election.

Allan Zachariah, a professor of economics, said, "Rubber farmers have been facing difficulties since long but they've got help only now before elections. The government should have stepped in much before."
