Residents have complained about the poor condition of roads in Hyderabad.
Hyderabad:
Pounded by severe rains through the months of August and September, roads in many parts of Hyderabad have taken a beating. Potholes and cracks are a common sight and the daily commute has become a nightmare for many.
"When heavy vehicles travel on this road, we are we are afraid of accidents as these vehicles could topple," said Ravinder, who takes the Kukatpally main road every day to get to his office.
Despite routine repair and renovation, the scenes are same as every other monsoon in the city. According Laxmikanth, a contractor, the flaw is with the process of the repairs commissioned by the officials.
"The problem arises after you have added yet another layer of tar to the city road. It requires a stay time, which is nearly impossible due to the high density of traffic in this area (Kukatpally area), making all efforts of the officials to go in vain," he said.
But at least three deaths in the past few weeks blamed on bad roads have brought their condition back into sharp focus, prompting inspections.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has identified around 200 km of roads of Hyderabad, as severely affected areas due to the rains.
These will be fixed as soon as possible, the authorities have promised.
GHMC Commissioner Dr Janardhan Reddy said that he, along with his team, is personally inspecting all roads on a daily basis.
