An official of the government-run telecom operator BSNL was killed and two more were injured today after gunmen opened fire at a crowded market in north Kashmir's Sopore district.
The terrorists allegedly targeted the employees of BSNL or Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, who were standing outside their shop in Iqbal Market in Sopore, 52 km from Srinagar. The shooters managed to escape.
All three officials worked with Iqra Telecom, a franchise of the BSNL. One of them, Mohammad Rafiq, 26, died in hospital. The two others are being treated for their injuries in Srinagar.
Sometime later, a jawan was injured when terrorists fired at an army patrol in Kulgam in South Kashmir.
Sopore today faced its second attack in less than 48 hours.
On Saturday, terrorists had hurled a grenade at a residential compound where a mobile transmission tower is installed.
Last month, three policemen were killed and another critically injured in attacks in the Kashmir Valley. There were three attacks in four hours on April 6.
