After NDTV reported the story about the parents of a nine-year-old rape survivor from Jharkhand who had to trek four kilometres to take her to the nearest government health care centre because they could not afford even a bicycle, helped has poured in for the family from NDTV viewers and readers of NDTV.com.
In July, the girl was lured out of her house by a local, taken to a riverside and raped multiple times, leading to her intestines being ruptured. Her condition is now stable but she needs a weekly visit to the primary health care centre to get her wounds dressed.
The family from Jharkhand's East Singhbhum district says since the story aired, they have received lakhs of rupees in donations in a bank account set up in the girl's name. By Thursday evening, over 200 people had come forward to help them.
The overwhelming help has brought some hope for the family. "My daughter will hopefully get much better soon. My wife and I would like to thank, with folded hands, everyone who pitched in to help my girl. It gives us a lot of hope. For us, you people are no less than the Gods we pray to daily. It was like divine intervention for us", says the father of the girl.
A leading hospital in Jharkhand, run by the Medanta group, has also decided help the family. "Initially the girl was scared of the doctors who were examining her, but now the parents and the girl are at ease here. An operation has been performed, the damage to her private parts has been totally repaired ", said Dr PD Sinha, a senior doctor at the Medanta Hospital
The Jharkhand High Court has ordered an immediate payment of Rs. 1 lakh to the family and has also asked the government to monitor the case. The local administration has promised a cycle, monetary help and even a job for the father, who works as a daily wager.
The man accused of the crime has been arrested and police says he is involved in another rape case too. Jharkhand saw 1050 rapes in 2014, according to the National Crime Records Bureau.
