After Unrest, Kashmir Hit By Mass Wedding Cancellations

Hudnreds of weddings have been postponed in Kashmir because the unrest.

Srinagar: The cards have been printed and the dates fixed but the Ilyas Bhat's sister will not be getting married on Saturday.

The Bhat family is among hundreds in Kashmir who have postponed weddings following the unrest in Kashmir after the death of terrorist Burhan Wani last week.

"We had completed 99 per cent of the arrangements for the wedding and we were waiting for 15th and 16th July to celebrate. But the killings and uncertainty in Kashmir forced us to postpone the wedding," said Ilyas Bhat.
 

Newspapers are filled with advertisements announcing postponements.

"We had come to celebrate the wedding, but due to curfew, so much destruction has happened in Kashmir that the wedding got postponed," said Ambar, a guest who arrived for wedding.

The violence in Kashmir Valley has hit the post-Ramazan wedding season. Newspapers are full of advertisements announcing the cancellation of feasts and invites related to wedding ceremonies.

Similar cancellations were witnessed in 2010 when protests erupted in the Kashmir and in 2014 when the devastating floods hit the state.
