Patna: Seven months into his first posting, a bureaucrat in Bihar has been jailed for corruption.

Jitendra Gupta, 35, was working as a senior administrative or Sub Divisional Officer in the Kaimur district in South Bihar when his driver was caught on Tuesday while asking for Rs 80,000 as a bribe.

The IAS officer was not present when the kickback was about to be paid.

The anti-corruption officers who arrested Mr Gupta say that he had caught three trucks carrying more iron ore than legally permissible and a kickback was negotiated.  The truck owners complained to anti-corruption officials, who accompanied them in plains clothes when the bribe was to be handed over.

Mr Gupta's arrest has marshalled anger among the state's bureaucrats, who say there's no direct evidence against  him and that his driver was entrapped by the local ironore mafia which has been seeking to punish the bureaucrat for his anti-graft drive.

But Ravindra Kumar, who heads Bihar's Vigilance Department which examines corruption among government officials, says there is enough evidence to prove Mr Gupta's guilt.
