E Ahamed fell unwell during President Pranab Mukherjee's speech at Budget session 2017
New Delhi:
E Ahamed, a senior leader from Kerala, collapsed today in parliament just as its budget session began. He suffered a cardiac arrest while both houses of parliament were being jointly addressed by President Pranab Mukherjee. Mr Ahamed, who served as Minister of State for External Affairs in Dr Manmohan Singh's government, was rushed out on a stretcher with a doctor attending to him.
The 78-year-old represents Kerala in the Lok Sabha and is the president of the Indian Union Muslim League.
Doctors at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where he is being treated, in Delhi said that the MP is on ventilator support.
"The MP had no pulse or heartbeat when he arrived at the hospital. A team of doctors carried out a resuscitation procedure following which his heartbeat returned. But his condition is critical and he is currently under close observation," a senior doctor said.
The Parliament staff tried to give Mr Ahmed first aid but since his condition did not improve, he was rushed to the hospital. Around 2:15 pm, he was shifted to RML trauma centre and put under ventilator.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inquired about his health. According to hospital sources, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi and Union minister Jitendra Singh visited RML hospital to inquire about Mr Ahamed's condition.
E Ahamed represents the Malappuram Lok Sabha constituency from Kerala.
