How Coldplay Fans Are Trying For Free Tickets

Axel, Milind and Edson have registered themselves with the Global Citizen's initiative.

Mumbai: Milind Alvares and Axel D'Souza own LPs of every album released by British band Coldplay, but they don't own a player and the records are displayed on a wall of their Goa home-cum-office in Parra.

They reckon they are the band's most ardent fans in India and had even started a Facebook page to 'brainstorm' on ways they could urge the band to put India on their itinerary.

But all that hasn't got them any closer to getting tickets for the Coldplay's November 19 show in Mumbai.

"We found out that tickets were going out at 12 midnight, and I decided to open 4 different machines - 2 mobile phones and 2 laptops. So we got into the queue on all four machines, filled in all the details and...Error...!" says Axel D'Souza.

But they kept trying to buy the limited tickets that were available online starting at Rs 5000. "Even with a short notice there were over a lakh in queue online waiting to buy tickets," recalls their friend Edson Martins.

Coldplay will be giving out 10,000 free tickets for their fans but not before they complete some 'tasks'. For that, one has to sign up on the Global Citizens website and download the app. After that, one has to earn 'rewards' with various actions, including signing petitions, sending out tweets, encouraging more people to join the Global Citizen's Initiative, among others.

So Axel, Milind and Edson have registered themselves with the Global Citizen's initiative hoping to collect enough points to enter the lottery draw and bag a ticket. How? By creating awareness about issues like the Global Poverty project has been tackling. Edson though feels fans like him would have been prepared to participate in more action oriented tasks as well. "Rather than having so many people just send out tweets and sign petitions maybe also see who can get their hands dirty by doing some actual work," he says.

The first set of free tickets are already out but they have drawn a blank so far.

They know at least three people within their family and friend circles who've got free tickets. "The tickets are sold out, the early bird ones. The draw is a one in a million. I hope to be that one in a million," says Milind as Axel adds, "I'm happy for them but it's not gone well for us so far."

There are four more rounds of tasks and points that will make fans like them eligible for free tickets and they are ready to do whatever it takes to grab a lucky spot. "Chris," says Milind, to Coldplay's front man, "let me carry your bags all through India.. show you some sights, just let me breathe the air that you do."

Fingers crossed, then as the new set of tasks open another door for possible free tickets.
