New Delhi:
A day after Delhi's prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University witnessed night-long protests over a missing student, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh ordered the Delhi Police to set up a special team to trace the young man.
Here are 10 developments in the story:
Union minister Rajnath Singh had called up the Commissioner of Delhi Police and gave the instruction to set up the special team.
The protesting students, who had kept the Vice Chancellor and other officials of the University confined in the administrative block for over 20 hours, have said they will continue their protests by peaceful means.
They are accusing the University authorities of not doing enough to trace Najeeb Ahmed, a Biotechnology student, who went missing after a brawl at his hostel on Friday night.
This morning, after being released, Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar had warned the students of strict action over the "illegal confinement". He said the students were not convinced about the University's sincerity about locating Najeeb Ahmed.
The JNU Students' Union president Mohit Sharma had said, "We have not illegally confined anybody. Electricity and all kind of supplies are here. We have also sent food for the people."
Najeeb Ahmed's mother Fatima Nafees, who had come to Delhi from her home in Badun after getting a frantic call from her son on Friday, said the University authorities of insensitivity.
"The administration did not inform us about him being missing on the campus. I came and approached the police myself. We forced our way into VC's office where he just told us that he is trying his best," she said.
The Left-linked All India Students Association has alleged that before he vanished, Mr Ahmed was beaten up by activists of the ABVP, which is linked to the ruling BJP.
Protests over his mystery disappearance escalated on Wednesday afternoon as hundreds of students demanded action and an assurance from Mr Kumar that enough was being done to look for Mr Ahmed.
Classes have been disrupted for three days over the protests at the prestigious university which has seen clashes this year over sedition charges against students including Kanhaiya Kumar.
